New Era Waves Go Year Round in 2011-2012 Season!
History of the Cumming Waves
The Cumming Waves Swim Team was created as a competitive summer swim team
for the City of Cumming, Georgia in 1977 by David Ellwanger. Mr. Ellwanger was a
Masters Swimmer. Masters Swimming is a successful blend of fitness and competitive
swimming. The regular structured workouts use techniques of interval training in an
atmosphere of fun, fitness, friendship and participation!
In 1978, David Horton took over the team. He was joined by his wife Nancy Horton
in 1979. The Horton’s ran a fun, competitive summer swim team for nearly two decades
through 1997. A few other coaches took over the team, including John Newcomer through
2001.
In 2001 Kris Hunt began coaching the Waves. Coach Kris has a philosophy which is
unbeatable and is extremely nurturing. Coach Kris believes in hard work and stroke basics,
which means The Waves win meets. The Waves won the North Georgia Swim League (NGSL) Title
seven (7) years in a row.
In the fall of 2011 the Waves became year round USA Swim Team. Coach Teresa Coan
was chosen to run the team. Coach Coan is an excellent stroke technician and an excellent
team builder. She also has an extensive background in Adaptive Swimming. Coach Coan has
the same philosophy as Coach Kris, hard work, stroke basics and respect, make for a winning
formula.
The Cumming Waves purpose is to provide a structured swimming athletic activity
for the children of our community. The Waves provide opportunities for each participant
to develop a positive self image. Opportunities are provided to participate in competitive
swimming through venues of Dual meets, North Georgia Swim League (NGSL) meets,
Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) meets and USA Swim meets.
The Cumming Waves have and will continue to build a fun, winning competitive swim team.
